What is an IBCLC?
The International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) credential is the highest international professional qualification in breastfeeding knowledge and support.
Before sitting the rigorous exams, candidates are usually accredited breastfeeding counsellors, midwives or health visitors and have additional advanced training in breastfeeding and lactation issues. To sit the exam, they must also have at least 1,000 hours of proven clinical experience, working with breastfeeding families.
All IBCLCs are certified by IBLCE (International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners) and are listed on the international register: www.iblce.org. IBCLCs must recertify every five years to ensure that skills and knowledge remain up to date and in line with latest research evidence. All IBCLCs are obliged to work in line with professional codes of conduct and ethics.
Each member of our team comes from a Breastfeeding Counsellor background, (as defined by NICE National Institute of Health and Care Excellence), and carries full professional insurance. We also continue to be accredited Breastfeeding Counsellors and share many years’ experience of supporting families with a huge range of feeding challenges.
We have all breastfed our own children and know how it feels to walk in the shoes of a new mother. We too have experienced sleepless nights and crying babies, worries about milk supply, painful feeds and low moments. We’ve all travelled our own journeys and passionately believe that families deserve good information and support as they find their own way to nurture their babies.
